BELIEFS

Let's shoot each other straight...

It would be unwise to blindly trust me with your theological development. We should each be intentional and discerning about the voices we allow to shape our theological beliefs and impact our approach to the Bible. When I encounter a voice that is new to me, I ask the following questions:

  • Does this person have a high view of Scripture? Or is he/she planting seeds of doubt, mistrust, and confusion?

  • Who or what is at the center of this person’s teaching? What appears to be their ultimate goal or agenda? What do they seem to want their readers and/or listeners to do with what they’ve learned? Does their teaching point back to God alone as the Savior of this story?

  • Who are the voices that have shaped and are shaping this teacher? Whose teaching do they sit under for their own spiritual formation – what church do they go to, what podcasts do they listen to, what books are they reading?

There is nothing more important than cultivating our relationship with God through prayer and the study of His Word  – every single behavior, thought, habit, and desire flows out of this one crucial relationship! It’s absolutely critical that we surround ourselves with voices who point us back to God alone, and encourage this type of spiritual growth and development. So, let me be abundantly clear: I want you to ask these same questions of me.

In fact, that’s the entire goal of this section of my website. I want you to be discerning, to test my words and motivations against God’s Word, and to be diligent about making me earn your theological trust.

So, again – poke around. Ask some questions. Find some answers. And remember that you can always hit the “Contact Me” button if there is anything else you want to know before taking the plunge with me. Happy discerning!
